Politics First, Rather than the Economy and Jobs

7 Jan 10:  Senator Ben Nelson (D – NB) (who received the “Cornhuskers Kickback” in exchange for voting in favor of the Senate Health Care Bill) is criticizing President Obama for spending so much time on health care.  He says that “his efforts would have been better spent on the economy.”  Of course Senator Nelson is right.  Unlike his campaign pledges relating to government “transparency,” President Obama determined that health care was going to be his legacy, so he needed to pass some kind of health care legislation, even if it had little to do with the details of his campaign promises.

Health care mania took much time and many resources away from the President and Congress.  The health care activities in Washington actually exacerbated the job problem by adding more uncertainties about future businesses costs.  It would have been better for the administration to deal head-on with the economy.  Now almost a full year has passed, and fixing the economy is still being talked about instead of acted upon.  “Pork”-infested stimulus bills will not turn the economy around.  We need long-term planning, including tax cuts, that will provide the vehicle for long-term jobs in the private sector.  Politics has preempted the economy.

The economy and jobs is one of the top priority items that Congress should be acting upon.  In Washington, I will find Representatives who have the same priorities so that we can form a “critical mass” to move Congress forward on this key issue.
